Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
