The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a significant honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
