Uche Fuels Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved outmatched even for a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
